Operation Christmas Child
Since Mort Bradley first started many years ago, Lakeside Presbyterian Church has been involved with Operation Christmas Child and part of sharing the Gospel with millions of children around the world. Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is one of many components of Samaritan’s Purse, an international ministry led by Franklin Graham.
Lakeside holds its annual church-wide Shoebox Packing Party each November. Lakeside also serves as a drop-off location for local churches, community groups and families to drop off their boxes. This gives us an opportunity to share the joy of all the boxes that have been collected and to help get them on their way!
In 2016, Lakeside collected 2,301 shoeboxes, and we would love to increase that amount in 2017! Pat Werne and Karen Carlson are the co-chairpersons of Operation Christmas Child for 2017. Their hope is to reach out to other churches, schools and organizations in the Reservoir area to continue to grow our community participation with OCC.
OCC National Collection Week is always held in November of each year, but that does not mean OCC cannot continue all year. While you are out shopping after each of the holidays, you can usually find some great bargains on stuffed animals, games and toys that are sometimes as much as 75% off! Back-to-school season from July to September is a great time for deals on school supplies like crayons, pencils, small coloring books, etc.
Other items to collect are toothbrushes, washcloths, soap, other hygiene items, hard candy, handmade items, and more. Starting this year, toothpaste will not be allowed in shoeboxes, due to customs regulations (as in many countries it is considered a prohibited food item.)
Stay tuned for more information leading up to National Collection Week in November. Our church family has been blessed to serve with this ministry, and we look forward to another successful year!
